APY = annual percentage yield. Institution names are not published on this site; after you inquire, we share the details with you directly. The display date is today’s date in U.S. Eastern Time; it is not the date a rate was verified. We review listings regularly (last review: Oct 29, 2026) and keep a dated source record for every listing. Rates change often and may differ by region or deposit amount; confirm the current APY, minimum and early withdrawal terms with the institution before opening an account. "Up to" means the highest yield a brokerage displayed for that term. Rate methodology · How we make money · Important disclosures

Interest estimates assume the APY holds for the full term and interest stays in the CD. Brokered CDs usually pay simple interest, so actual earnings may differ slightly.

When a no-penalty CD makes sense

Pros

  • Fixed rate with an exit if you need the cash
  • You can move to a higher-paying CD if rates rise
  • Good home for an emergency fund you don’t expect to touch

Cons

  • Rates can be lower than standard CDs of a similar term
  • Many require closing the whole CD to withdraw
  • Usually no additional deposits after opening

FAQs

How does a no-penalty CD work?
You lock in a fixed rate like a regular CD, but you can withdraw your money before maturity without paying a penalty — usually after the first six or seven days. Some no-penalty CDs require you to withdraw the full balance and close the CD; others allow partial withdrawals.
Why can’t I withdraw in the first week?
Federal rules generally require a penalty on withdrawals made within six days of the deposit, so most no-penalty CDs make you wait about a week.
Do no-penalty CDs pay less than regular CDs?
Often, but not always. The top no-penalty listing in our table pays 4.46% APY. Compare it with the 1-year CD table to see what flexibility costs you.
Is a no-penalty CD better than a high-yield savings account?
A no-penalty CD locks in its rate for the term, while a savings rate can drop at any time. Savings accounts, though, let you add money and make repeated withdrawals. If you want a guaranteed rate and may need the money, a no-penalty CD is a strong middle ground.
